About Helen Armstrong
Helen likes animals – you can tell that from the books. She has always kept pets – mice, hamsters, guinea pigs, dogs, cats, birds, fish and sometimes tadpoles! At the moment she has one dog called Hetty. Helen hasn’t written a book about Hetty yet but maybe she will one day!
Hetty likes going walking with Helen which is a good thing because Helen goes for long walks wherever she is – in city parks, or country woods or up hills and mountains. Some of her best ideas for stories come into her head when she is walking! Dogs like walking too, but Ratty says that he’d rather ride on Cow’s head or Woolly’s back. He only has very short legs so he’s not really the right shape for walking.
Helen loves swimming too. Usually she swims in her local pool but she loves to go in the sea whenever she can. In one of Ratty’s adventures he and his friends swim across a wide cold river in the dark. It’s very frightening for all of them but they keep going and they get to the other side at last!
Helen is learning to play the harp – she likes music and the harp makes a lovely noise even when you are just starting out. Do you know what a harp looks like? Is there any instrument you’d like to play?
Most of all Helen likes writing. She writes early in the morning before most people and most animals are awake. Then she puts all the pages she’s written onto the computer later. Do you like working on computers?
